Chapter 9

This time when Cooper opened his eyes to find Brianna sleeping soundly beside him, he was not filled with dread. Of course, it helped that they were both fully clothed, having fallen into bed exhausted after another round of heart-wrenching sobs that shook her body and crushed his soul. She had finally slept curled against his side, and he had held onto her as though his life depended on it. Having spent time in the hospital with her brother and niece, Cooper’s awareness of his fear of loss came back into focus clearly. Seeing Avery fight for her life while Brian bit back tears of confusion and fear had dug up all his memories of losing everyone he had dared to love. It reminded him how short life could be.

It was cruel that Avery was now facing the possibility that she might die. Every time he saw her, Cooper had seen a bit of Brianna in her. It was not just the ready smile and happy dancing eyes. Her charm was ingratiating, and with very little effort the youngster had wormed her way into his affections as easily as Brianna had years ago. That made it all the more difficult to see her lost inside the huge hospital bed, her face pale and her eyes filled with fear.

When he saw Brian wearing the same lifeless look that his father had worn when he informed Cooper of his mother’s death, Cooper had felt the losses in his life all over again. He hated it, and the desire to flee came on strong. It was a difficult dilemma to deal with, for at the same time he felt an overwhelming desire to be there for Brianna. He understood her pain and the need to have someone help her through it. He owed her that much. She had always been there for him, and now it was time to give back.

So he cradled her in his arms all night, sleeping fitfully as his fears led to nightmares of losing Brianna. Every time he woke, breathing heavily and covered in sweat, he felt her close and squeezed a little tighter. How could he leave when she and her family needed him? He had to stay.

But there was a danger to his chivalry, one that centered in his loins. She aroused him. Unlike any other woman he had encountered, Brianna Evans reminded him that he had longings and desires, and they all seemed to focus on the beautiful woman whose limbs were currently entwined with his. Though she still slept soundly, every time her finger twitched or her breathing hitched, he felt a lightning bolt sizzle from his heart to his groin despite the strain he was under.

His mind went back to Paris, remembering her soft sighs and her ecstatic cries. Would he ever forget the wonder in her voice when she called out his name? Over and over again he had replayed that joyous moment when he thought he would die from sheer pleasure and the ecstasy of being one with her.
